Gil Gevins, a twenty year resident of Puerto Vallarta, has given us a remarkably funny and varied book of stories based upon his experiences as an expatriate living in Mexico. Although their principle aim is to entertain, these stories also give the reader a comprehensive view, albeit through a slightly damaged lens, of what life is really like for an American living and working in the land of mescal and mariachis. Somewhat guarded about his past, Mr. Gevins has admitted to working as a fire lookout, writing for the Berkeley Barb newspaper and renovating old Victorians in San Francisco. At the present time Gevins and his wife own and operate LUCY'S CUCU CABANA, one of the finest folk-art shops in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Every summer they travel all over their adopted country, buying Mexican crafts and getting in and out of minor but hilarious scrapes, many of them detailed in his Puerto Vallarta book. | |
